Portland, Oregon
(2005)
I enjoyed my time in Portland. They have a really
great Union Station and lots of Amtrak activity with the two Empire Builders, two Coast
Starlights, and multiple Cascades trains. They also have a really cool light rail transit
system, TriMet's Metropolitan Area Express (MAX).
I spent many of my hours in Portland watching and riding the MAX trains and
checking out the large Steel Bridge over the Willamette river. The current bridge was
built by Union Pacific in 1912, MAX rail lines were added in the 1980's, and a
pedestrian/bicycle crossing was added in 2001. This is the only double deck bridge in the
world where the lower deck can be raised independently from the upper deck.
I stayed in Portland for two days and then went took the Cascades train north on my
way to Vancouver, BC.

It's Portland's Union
Station, where "going by train" is encouraged.

It's a well-used bridge. In

of engines below, and pedestrains on the lower walkway.
